Understanding The Basics Of Tennis

The basics of the great game of tennis are few, yet require many hours of practice.

The purpose of tennis is to send the ball over the net to land within the boundaries of the opposite court in such a way that the opponent will have difficulty returning it. Ninety percent of tennis points are won on errors, i.e., balls hit into the net or out of court. A beginner must have faith that "good form" will pay dividends, once he gains control of his shots. A good-form stroke sends the ball more swiftly and accurately to spots on the court where the opponent will have the most difficulty in returning it.

Beginners are warned that they must be content with a goal of "getting the ball over the net" and not expect to hit special areas very often. Likewise the beginner will dwell in "Dubland" more often than he wants to. He must practise patiently, first to conquer the net and boundary lines so that his balls land somewhere within the court.

Later he will learn to control his shots. Although many of his shots will miss the target, it is better to try for them during practise than to be content with "Dubland" shots. It takes time to achieve tennis placement shots just as in the case of a 200-yard golf drive or bowling strike.

Your first assignment in learning good tennis strokes is to find out what they look like. Watch good players to get the mental image of the stroke, footwork, and body action. Next you must learn what the stroke feels like. This muscle-picture comes through imitating the form of good players.

Because it is very hard to watch oneself perform, the advice of a coach or good player is invaluable. However, it is important to imitate the strokes of a player who has the same body build as yours. Thus if you have long arms and legs, with a flexible trunk, don't try to imitate a short, heavy player.

The beginner should not be deceived by freak methods of stroking. There is sufficient freedom possible within a range of sound techniques. The reader is expected to use his common sense in working out the type of strokes which suits him best. Tennis is an individual game and skill is dependent upon the type of physique, mental, and emotional make-up of the player.

The big difference between men and women players is degree of strength. Naturally men players can hit the ball harder. Often women players make up for their lack of strength by greater accuracy. Court strategy differs only in the amount of net play used. Many women players cannot hit the ball hard enough to follow it to the net. Thus women's tennis is often characterized by being a baseline game with net trimmings, while men's tennis becomes a net game with baseline trimmings. The best women players are at the top because they play a man's game.

When you can make your opponent hit the ball into the net or out of court, you have a winning game. There is a limit to the force which can be placed on the ball, if it is to be accurately placed. Each learner must decide on a happy combination of force and accuracy, although good force must be used in good-form strokes. Good force does not mean trying to hit the cover off the ball, and home runs pay no dividends in tennis.

Research studies have shown that beginners frequently fail to hit the ball squarely in the center of the racquet because they do not watch the ball, or do not get the racquet behind the ball in time to aim it accurately. This is just one of the many basics which must be practised.

Tennis is a wonderful game and well worth all the hours you can spend to increase your skill. Good luck!

Tennis Masters Cup - Frenchman Simon beat Federer surprisingly at Shanghai

The French of 23-years old Gilles Simon upset the No.2 of the world Roger Federer in the first game of the Tennis Masters Cup in Shanghai by beating him 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. This is Simon's first time at the year-end tournament and this victory surprised everyone, not only by the way he played against Federer but by proving everyone he didn't came to Shanghai to just participate, he is competing for the title.

Gilles Simon was called to the tournament after the No. 1 Rafael Nadal announced he will withdraw the tournament due to injury and fatigue.

The 13-time Grand Slam champion, Roger Federer had an injury on his back and withdrew a couple weeks ago at the Paris Masters to rest and prepare for this final tournament. However his lack of serve in this match against Simon and his interminable errors, gave the French an easy way to achieve the victory. Federer had 50 unforced errors compared to 38 from Simon, and the Swiss serve was more slow than usual, that gave the Frenchman an advantage in the game.

Although, at the beginning of the match, the Swiss seemed comfortable and ready to play as he defeated the Frenchman 6-4 in the first set and was winning 3-2 in the second set. Nevertheless Simon got back on track by breaking some points and minimizing his errors and at the end, the French played almost perfectly in the last two sets and Federer finished with fatal errors.

The Swiss expressed that his serve was not meaningful due to his injury and that he didn't have enough practice, besides he admitted that the Frenchman played in an amazing way.

“Definitely today I missed shots I normally don't miss. I think that's just lack of practice. I didn't serve full-blast, especially from the start. I don't know if that cost me the match. Besides the better you play, the better he plays, he's quite an unusual player and he makes you work hard and runs very well," said the defending champion world Federer.

This is the 14th loss of Federer this season and the second against the Frenchman, who also beat him at the Toronto Masters in a great way. This season hasn't been the greatest for the Swiss as he lost his consecutive winning strike at Wimbledon and his four and half year reign as the No.1 of the world.

Nevertheless, it has to be mentioned that Federer has fought through all that adversity; he recovered his game by winning the U.S Open and the doubles gold medal at Beijing Olympics, gaining back his credibility as a great tennis player. Besides, this is not the final match for Federer on the tournament as he has yet to play against Murray and Roddick and seek for chance to classify for the semifinals on Saturday.

Last year the same situation happened to Federer, who lost the first game against Fernando Gonzalez, but then the Swiss got all the way to the final playing in great way, grasping the Tennis Masters Cup title for the 4th time in his professional career.

Everyone that admires this talented player hope for the Swiss to have the same luck than last year and to end the season in an amazing way. On the other hand, there are some other tennis fans that would like to see some other player winning the tournament. We'll witness if the history changes or not at the end of this week.

ATP Tennis- Andy Murray Captured the Madrid Masters Title

The No.4 of the world of 23 years old, Andy Murray, captured his fourth ATP title of the year at the Madrid Masters in Spain by beating the French and world No.10 Gilles Simons 6-4, 7-6(8/6). It was a closed game but at the end the victory was for the British player, especially after his 10 aces and saving two set points in a tiebreaker.

Gilles stated that Murray took advantage of his tiredness after playing Nadal in the semifinals by making him run side to side. However, Murray expressed that he was also mentally and physically tired after the semifinal with Roger Federer, just as Simon was tired of his semifinal with Nadal. The key of his success in the final was his great serve, with which he was able to make 10 aces. Thanks to this, his triumph was unbreakable and became in another great accomplishment for his tennis career, which is growing gradually.

Before winning the Madrid Masters, Murray won titles at the Cincinnatti Masters, Doha and Marseille, becoming the first British player to win four ATP titles in a single season and solidifying that way his spot as the No.4 of the ATP rankings.

After this victory, many are saying that the British has joined the “Big Four" along with Nadal, Federer and Djokovic; however, the Scot expressed that he still has a long way to go and a lot of work to be done before comparing himself with these three great players.

“I've played great the last few months, but those guys have been unbelievable for the last couple of years. They are so consistent on every surface and throughout the whole year. Those guys have been awesome and I'm still not close to them yet, I still need to keep working hard," stated Murray to the press.

Nevertheless, the Scot has beaten these three contenders in various occasions. With Djokovic, Murray has met in six occasions, losing the first four, but winning in the in the last two meetings with the Serbian, during the Cincinnati Masters and the Rogers Cup. Against Federer, Murray has been victorious in three of the five matches they have played, the most recent one in the semifinal of the Madrid Masters. And finally against Nadal, Murray has played six clashes winning only one of them, but it was a very important one because it was precisely during the U.S Open semifinals this year.

As everybody knows, this British has had an awesome season this year, with great accomplishments to be remembered and a great future in the ATP Tour. We hope he will end strong this season since he is already qualified to the Shanghai Masters Cup at the end of the ATP Season.

His next challenge will be the St. Petersburg Open, where he will have to defend his points since he is the defending champion of the tournament. After St. Petersburg, he will go on playing the Paris Masters and finally, the end-tournament of the season at the Masters Cup in Shanghai. Murray hopes to secure his 4th place at the rankings and to keep his great run at the remaining tournaments of the year.

A fun way to beat your friends at table tennis - it's payback time!

Introduction:
We've probably all picked up a table tennis bat at some stage in our lives, either in the basement, garage, at school or at work. There's always a few over-enthusiastic characters out there that play just to win, and make fun of those they beat. Well if you've been on the receiving end of this 'abuse', this guide may be just for you. This guide is for those casual players, that have acquired some basic skills in table tennis, can generate a little spin on the ball, but don't take it seriously enough to play competition at clubs. It takes advantage of two very different rubbers that you can put on either side your bat, which very few casual players understand.

The Basics:
The key to making this strategy work is spin and deception, with your opponent not knowing what type of spin is on the ball. This usually results in your opponent missing the ball completely, or hitting it in the net or over the table.

The basic equipment you need for this strategy is a bat with 2 totally contrasting rubbers on either side, one a very tacky (sticky) and spinney rubber (such as most Chinese rubbers) and one 'long pimple' rubber. The spinney rubber is obviously very good for generating spin, whereas the long pimple rubber is unique in that it returns most your opponent's spin back to him. These types of rubbers can be picked up fairly cheap at quite a few online shops, such as One of a Kind Trading in Australia for example. A few recommendations are given at the end of this article. The blade (the bat without the rubbers) is not very important for this strategy to be successful, as the rubbers do most of the work. So if you don't already have a blade, you can buy a cheap one from the same shop, and they'll normally put it together for you free of charge.

Technically you need one red and one black rubber on either side of the bat. However this is really only a requirement for competition, so if you only play casually this is not necessary. To be totally ruthless and make it even harder for your opponent, you can have the same colour rubber on both sides, so that he cannot judge which one you're hitting with. Because the spin coming off the two different rubber is so different, hitting the ball with one side followed by a hit from the other side will produce very different results, leaving your opponent totally confused. However most casual players don't even look at what side you hit with, so it may not be as great an advantage.

Putting it into practice:
Ok, so you've got your new 'evil' weapon, what strategy do you use to make the most of it? Well there's two parts to this (1) when you serve (2) when your receive:

1. When you serve:
Put as much backspin and/or sidespin on the ball with your tacky rubber by brushing the ball with a forward action underneath (and sideways for sidespin). With these rubbers this is much easier to do, but will still take a little practice. This will probably win you quite a few points outright, but some will come back. When it comes back, it will invariably have significant spin coming back, either your own, or spin that your opponent imparts. Hit the next shot with the long pimple rubber, don't hit it hard or try to attack it, but try to keep it low as possible but make sure it's on the table. The long pimple rubber will actually reverse the spin that's coming towards you, which will produce very unpredictable bounces and balls. Chances are high that your opponent will miss the ball, or pop it up high so that you can put the next one away, so be ready. If he returns it, continue the rally by either spinning the ball with your tacky rubber, or gently returning it with your pimple rubber.

If you find your opponent is good enough to get used to your spinney serves, and adjust for it, do a similar looking serve with your long pimple rubber, and enjoy the results. Your opponent will adjust for spin that's not there, and this will force errors or easy balls to put away.

2. When you receive:
If your opponent uses a lot of spin in his serves, try and return them all with the long pimple rubber. This will return most of his own spin back to him, and will get himself into trouble. If he serves with very little spin, try and return it with your spinney rubber if you can. If he returns this, some spin will be returned back to you, so you hit the next one with your long pimple rubber, and try and force another error.

Conclusion:
Now I'm not saying this is going to be really easy, as it will take you a little time to learn how to use the rubbers, and adjust to them. It would be best to have some practice with the bat against some other players to adjust to them, before you embark on your mission of 'destroying the bullies'. Note that attacking with the long pimple rubbers is not recommended, as these technique as more advanced, but for blocking and chopping they are fairly easy to use at any level.

This type of bat and strategy IS actually used in high-level competition, and are even used by a few of the top players in the world. At the higher levels however, it takes a great deal of skill and practice to be effective, and these simple strategies covered here simply won't work. This style of play does add another exiting aspect to the game, and can be a lot of fun at any level. There are numerous different types of rubbers, and blades, all having some different characteristics and requiring some different strategies. There is a lot more to these types of bats than what's covered here, and a lot more strategies that can be employed. If you've enjoyed this guide, or wish to read more about other rubbers or strategies, you could visit the author's website or forum for more information.

Tennis Racquets Today

In today's technology, tennis racquets have been perfected to meet everyone's requirement. The racquets are the most important item to help you play your best. There are many factors to decide when picking your exact match for a racquet.

First though we must understand how a racquet works.

Head sizeThe bigger the racquet, the more power it gives you with its larger sweet spot. The smaller the racquet the more control it gives you to perfect your accuracy, but you'll need to be providing most of the power. A medium sized racquet will give you a large sweet spot, and a little bit better control compared to a large size one.

A large head will be in the size of 107-125 square inches.A medium head will be in the size of 100-106 square inches.A small head will be in the size of smaller than 100 square inches.

Length

A larger length will give you more power because of the leverage, and a longer reach for the ball. These will usually be 28.5-29 inches. A smaller size length will give less power but more control, and it will be easier to handle. The size will be from 27.5-28 square inches.

Weight

The weight you'll find for rackets is as follows.Heavy: more than 11 ounces.Average: 9.8-10.9 ouncesLight: less than 9.4 ounces

The heavier, the more power output, while the lighter the more control.

Stiffness

A stiff racquet will provide a more powerful shot; it dampens the vibrations and is generally easier to play with. A flexible racquet will be less powerful but offer more control.

Shape

Oval: Most common shape, the sweet spot is a little above the middle of the head.Tear Drop: Provides most of the racquet to act as a sweet spot.

Grip Size

Where all the control of the racket will be coming from, it is just as important as any other part of the racquet. To find one that suits you, it's a matter of finding the perfect size. If it's too big, the racquet will twist around loosing you control. If the grip size is too big, then your wrist won't be able to snap as easily. Both of these can cause tennis elbow.

What's your skill level? For beginners just starting to play the game, a cheap basic racquet with a large head and an already strung is the best. The size should be from 107-125 sq. inches.

For intermediate players with more experience and ones that play more often, you have more options. You can buy a small light one, if you want to have better control and already have the power, or stay with a large one to maximize your hitting power

For advanced players who compete or play numerous times a week will need a high grade composite made racquet that offers light weight, and maximum power potential.
